Addendum: There were originally two balls in this lot. The other was ultimately deemed "Clubhouse" signed by PSA/DNA and has been removed.
Just as Willie Mays was a trailblazer in integrating baseball Sam Jones of the Celtics helped break down racial barriers in basketball. Drafted by the Celtics in 1957 this was only seven years after the NBA’s race barrier was abolished. It’s only natural that these two giants of their respective sports would cross paths and this single-signed baseball is illustrative of that bond between these two racial trailblazers.
The 1963-69 era Spalding Official National League (Giles) ball is signed in 7-8/10 blue ballpoint on a side panel by Mays and inscribed to Sam Jones and his wife “To Sam + Gladys Best Wishes Willie Mays.” The ball shows some scuffing and very light toning from age and possible use while the last part of Mays' signature has been lightly scuffed. A very nice personalized ball gifted from the greatest five-tool player in baseball to the best clutch shooter in Celtics history.
