The treatment Jesse Owens endured both before and after his Olympic victories would have made a lesser man bitter and angry. Not so with Owens. Throughout his life he strove to demonstrate that all men and women, regardless of color or religion, should and could be treated with equal respect. With that in mind, the National Conference of Christians and Jews made the Olympic hero their 1978 recipient of their Brotherhood Award. This is the medal and plaque Owens was presented on March 29, 1978.
The sterling silver medal (51mm; 75g), marked "D&C STER" on rim, is suspended from a 35" folded blue ribbon and is engraved with “JESSE OWENS MARCH 29, 1978.” The accompanying plaque measures 9" by 10¼" and features an engraved scroll mounted in its center which reads in part “FOR DEDICATED SERVICE IN THE FIELDS OF HUMAN RELATIONS.” Both the award and ribbon have minor condition issues due to age and storage, none of which takes anything away the display value or meaning behind what this award represents.
Includes LOA signed by each of Jesse Owens' three daughters.
