For the first and only time since the British Empire and Commonwealth Games began in 1930, the 1966 event was to be held outside the “white commonwealth” in Kingston, Jamaica. To add some athletic royalty to the event, Jesse Owens and fellow Olympians Johnny Weissmuller and Harold Abrahams were hired by Radio Jamaica as commentators during the Games. In appreciation for his participation, Owens was presented with this commemorative medal. Measuring 54mm in diameter and weighing 60g, the obverse features the coat of arms of the city of Kingston and the reverse reads “COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL 1966 VIII BRITISH EMPIRE AND COMMONWEALTH GAMES KINGSTON, JAMAICA”. The medal, most likely made of bronze, shows light wear from age and displays beautifully.
Includes LOA signed by each of Jesse Owens' three daughters.
