In preparation for the Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo in 1964, the Tokyo Olympic Fund Raising Association commissioned Yusaku Kamekura to design a commemorative coin to be used for raising donations and to present to dignitaries. Cast in Sterling Silver and produced in very limited numbers, its front depicts four runners in mid-race with “TOKYO 1964 XVIII OLYMPIAD.” The reverse features the rising sun with “TOYKO 1964” flanking the Olympic rings and Japanese characters below; the Sterling ".925" engraving is on the very bottom. This special coin was presented to Jesse Owens for his renown as the world’s most famous Olympic hero turned goodwill ambassador. Measuring 30mm in diameter and weighing 18 grams, it shows light wear from age and comes inside an unrelated but perfectly fitting JFK holding case.
