R. Tait McKenzie was the father of modern physical fitness and health education. Born in Canada, McKenzie taught at the University of Pennsylvania during the first three decades of the twentieth century, during which he made significant strides in the fields of medicine, health education and physical training. On the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1967, a special medallion was produced by the Medallic Art Company and presented to several individuals who exemplified all the ideals of health and education McKenzie stood for in his lifetime. Perhaps no other living person in 1967 more deserved of this medal that Jesse Owens.

The 2½” bronze medal weighs 4.5 oz. and features a bust of R. Tait McKenzie on the obverse surrounded by the legend “1867-1938 PHYSICIAN EDUCATOR SCULPTOR CENTENNIAL OF HIS BIRTH-1967”. The reverse is decorated with an intricate Grecian-themed athletic motif representing athletics, a design first employed by McKenzie for the 1932 Los Angeles Games. The medal was sculpted by J.R. Sinnock, chief engraver of the U.S. Mint. A rare and truly magnificent commemorative medal awarded to Jesse Owens, the man whose life mission represented the ideals set forth by the man depicted on bronze surface. The medal shows very light toning from age, which in fact only improves its display value. Edge engraved "METALLIC ART CO. NY".

Includes LOA signed by each of Jesse Owens' three daughters.
