Super Bowl V which pitted the AFC Champion Baltimore Colts against the NFC Champion Dallas Cowboys on January 17 1971 is sometimes called the "Blunder Bowl" because it was filled with poor play a missed point after touchdown (PAT) penalties turnovers and even officiating miscues. But in the end the Colts prevailed 16-13 in the Miami Orange Bowl that day to win the NFL title.
This lot features a game worn and inscribed Baltimore Colts jersey from that memorable day that belonged to special teams player and backup running back Jack Maitland. As a 22-year-old rookie Maitland rushed 74 times for 209 yards and scored two touchdowns during the regular season. And even though he started the year wearing uniform number 23 he was able to get his old college uniform number 40 back by mid-October. That’s also the number jersey he wore on football’s biggest stage. The white mesh size 46 jersey reflects incredible wear with dirt and grass stains throughout especially around the neck and collar. Maitland’s blue number “40” appears on the front back and both sleeves painted in blue.
On the front left tail is a sewn-in "Sand Aire" manufacturer's tag complete with washing instructions. Attached to the bottom of that is a size "46" flag tag. Super Bowl V was the first time the Colts ever wore the combination of this Sand Aire tag with a white mesh jersey. Across the shoulder blades reads his last name ("MAITLAND") in blue tackle twill sewn onto a white nameplate. Maitland has signed the back of the jersey in black marker with the following inscription: “Worn in Super Bowl V 1/17/71.” Such a rarity to find an early Super Bowl gamer and this one is market-fresh straight from the player himself.
Includes LOA from Jack Maitland. Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
