In 1959 Ernie Davis won the Heisman Trophy as college football’s best player while competing as a running back for Syracuse University. Despite being drafted into the NFL the first round by the Cleveland Browns Davis never played a down in the pros as he was diagnosed with leukemia before he ever had the chance. His story was made into the critically acclaimed film “The Express” which came out in 2008 and starred Rob Brown in the lead role. This lot features a salesman’s sample of Davis’s 1959 Syracuse Orangemen National Championship Ring.
The 10K gold size 12 ring includes a large orange stone in the center with raised lettering surrounding the gem that reads “SYRACUSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1959.” The design includes a pair of raised footballs bookending 1959. One shank reads “COTTON BOWL CHAMPIONS” “SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY FOUNDED AD 1870” “SYRACUSE 23 TEXAS 14” and “SALTING.” The other shank reads “E. DAVIS” “WON 11 LOST 0” “WARRIORS” and includes a football helmet with a large “S” on the side of it. A pair of raised footballs’ finish off the design. The inner band is stamped “JOSTENS 10K.”
