The late Jim Martin was a two-way player for the Detroit Lions in the 1950s and ‘60s. A linebacker on defense and an offensive guard and placekicker he played 14 hard-hitting NFL seasons mostly for the Lions. In 1952 Martin helped Detroit win its second NFL championship ever after posting a 9-3 regular season record before defeating the Browns in Cleveland 17-7 for the title. This lot features Martin’s 1952 Lions NFL World Championship wristwatch he was awarded following the team’s thrilling victory.
The gold-plated Longines wristwatch features a specially designed face that includes the letters “DETROIT LIONS” in place of the regular numerals on the dial. In addition behind the hour and minute hands the face of the watch reads: “1962 WORLD CHAMPIONS National Football League.” Sporting an adjustable gold-plated band the watch includes engraving on the back that simply reads “JAMES R. MARTIN.” The commemorative timepiece is accompanied by its original L.G. Balfour” blue velvet presentation case and outer box.
