His name known around the world is “Pele.” But the former Brazilian soccer superstar’s given name – Edson Arantes do Nascimento – is not so familiar. In fact he was named after the American inventor Thomas Edison. His parents decided to remove the "i" and simply call him "Edson" but there was a mistake on his birth certificate which led to many documents showing his name as "Edison" not "Edson" as he is called. Born into poverty Pele turned things around by signing his first professional soccer contract at the age of 15 with Santos Football Club of the Brazilian professional league. From 1956-74 Pele starred for Santos and became the greatest to ever play the game of "football" as he tallied an incredible 619 goals in 638 career games. In 1957 he joined the Brazil National Team at the age of 16. During his international career he won three FIFA World Cups (1958 1962 and 1970) being the only player ever to do so and remains the all-time leading goal scorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 91 games.
This lot features an early 1970’s Pele signed and inscribed Santos F.C. game worn jersey. The long-sleeved white cotton jersey includes a “S.F.C.” embroidered blue-and-white patch over the left chest area as well as a pair of gold stars. His uniform number “10” in sewn onto the back in green cotton numerals. A red white and blue “ATHLETA” manufacturer’s tag appears on the inside rear collar. Pelé has signed and inscribed the front of the jersey in Portuguese "To Carlos with care your friend Edson = Pele." Santos jerseys are much scarcer to find in the hobby than his New York Cosmos gamers.
