Brooks Calbert Robinson Jr. played his entire 23-year Major League career for the Baltimore Orioles from 1955-1977. Nicknamed “The Human Vacuum Cleaner” or “Mr. Hoover” he is considered the greatest defensive third baseman of all time. From 1960-1975 he won an incredible 16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards. In 1983 his first year of eligibility he became one of only 16 first ballot Hall of Famers with his election from nearly 92 percent of voters. A couple of anomalies may have contributed to Robinson’s unparalleled success as a fielder. He batted and threw right handed though he was naturally left handed. This gave him great feel with both hands. And though he was relatively slow afoot he had cat-like reflexes.

The Gold Glove Award offered here commemorates the 1966 season a year in which he was voted the All-Star Game MVP and finished second to teammate Frank Robinson in the AL MVP voting (it took Frank’s Triple Crown that year to beat him out). Brooks hit over 20 home runs (something he would accomplish six times in his career) drive in 100 runs for the second time and established a personal high for runs scored. Along the way he helped his beloved O's knock off an L.A. Dodger team led by Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale to win the 1966 World Series.

Decades ago the famously generous Robinson dispersed his original gold gloves among family and friends. The management at Rawlings later supplied Robinson with a second personal set the full run of sixteen for his own collection. All were presented to Robinson at his Baltimore Memorial Stadium farewell ceremony on September 18 1977. The offered gold glove originates from that personal set and represents lucky number seven of his 16 straight. The award remains in outstanding original condition and comes with a letter of authenticity from Brooks Robinson.
