In the history of the NFL the 1985 Chicago Bears will go down as one of the most exciting teams in league history. Statistically speaking the team was one of the greatest ever assembled but its memory endures because of the unique cast of characters that brought unbridled fun to the field every Sunday. Led by “Da Coach” legendary Mike Ditka the Bears were determined to redeem themselves after a tough NFC Championship loss to the 49ers the year before. Chicago won its first twelve games driven on offense by the always entertaining and devastatingly effective QB play of Jim McMahon and the arguably the greatest running back in NFL history Walter Payton.
More than anything the ’85 Bears were known for their dominating D—branded the “46 Defense by coordinator Buddy Ryan—which allowed a minuscule 12 points per game. Linebacker Mike Singletary’s wide eyes pierced across the line while a stacked four-man front led by fellow Hall of Famers Richard Dent and Dan Hampton prepared to attack from the ends. Steve “Mongo” McMichael and a gap-toothed rookie named William “Refrigerator” Perry—whose immense size and quick feet made for a lethal combination—plugged the middle. The Bears went 15-1 and then plowed through the playoffs to meet the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX. The onslaught continued the Bears hammered the Pats 46-10 to set a new Super Bowl record for points scored.
Presented here is the Lombardi trophy awarded to a Bears front office executive following the team’s victory in Super Bowl XX. The simple yet classic design features a silver-plated football atop a matching pedestal bearing the NFL crest logo and engraved with “VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY SUPER BOWL XX CHAMPIONS THE CHICAGO BEARS.” Measuring 16 inches tall and weighing 6 pounds it is the same size that players receive. The trophy shows significant wear with some of the plating chipped off the pedestal. The name of the recipient is engraved on the bottom of the left rear panel. He has requested that his name not be visible online during the auction. What a tremendous original example of the most coveted trophy in football won by perhaps the greatest team in NFL history.
