John Roseboro had another solid year for the Dodgers behind the plate in 1963 with 9 home runs and 49 RBI in 135 games. In the World Series his 3-run HR in the 2nd inning of Game 1 was enough to power the Dodgers to a 5-2 victory over their American League rivals the New York Yankees. The Dodger would go on to sweep the Yankees in four straight to take the series. A 6-time All-Star 2-time Gold Glover and 3-time World Champion with the Dodgers Roseboro played 14 seasons and is perhaps best remembered for taking two bat blows to the head from Giants pitcher Juan Marichal in 1965 adding more fuel to the fire of the Dodger-Giants bitter rivalry.
The offered bat was issued for use by the longtime Dodger catcher during their 1963 World Series Championship season! The 35.25-inch 31.6 ounce bat – which is clearly engraved “WORLD SERIES 1963 ROSEBORO LOS ANGELES DODGERS” on the barrel – is uncracked and in outstanding original condition. Two small nails are apparent on both ends from previous mounting. Model number “016” is present on the knob and the bat shows light overall use. Roseboro has signed the barrel in slightly faded black marker. A unique and important bat from a key figure from a glorious era of Dodgers baseball.
