Football icon Hugh McElhenny first rose to stardom as a standout all-around player for Compton (Calif.) Junior College in 1948. In fact he led Compton to the Junior College National title that season. He then transferred to the University of Washington where he was a two-time All-Pacific Coast Conference fullback for the Huskies and set several school and conference records. Drafted by the San Francisco 49ers with the ninth pick in the 1951 NFL Draft McElhenny made an immediate impact in the league and earned five first-team All-Pro honors in his first six seasons.
This lot features McElhenny’s 1948 Junior College Football National Championship ring from 1948. Certainly a bit tarnished through the ensuing years the ring remains in good condition and includes a raised gold football in the center with a ruby-colored “C” embedded on the football. It reads “NATIONAL CHAMPIONS” in raised lettering around the center portion. The left shank features “19” while the right shank reads “48” to commemorate the memorable season. Stamped inside the band are his initials "H.E.M." along with "H.J. CO" for maker Herf Jones. Size is 11.5 and weight is 20 grams.
