In 2009, playing their first season at the new Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers won their 27th World Series title after knocking off the Phillies in the Fall Classic. New York went 103-59 in the regular season to win the AL East, swept the Twins in the ALDS, and then faced off against the Angels in the ALCS. It took six games for the Yanks to win the pennant, and this offered second base bag hails from that Game 6 home clincher, a methodical 5-2 victory with the familiar tune of Andy Pettitte starting it and Mariano Rivera finishing it. Jeter, A-Rod, Cano and company did their part on offense, although the nine free passes issued by Halos pitching certainly helped.
According to the MLB Authentication database, this 2nd base bag was used in the 3rd and 4th innings, respectively, and saw a ton of action in the bottom of the 4th when the Yanks put six runners on and scored three times against Angels starter Joe Saunders to take a commanding 3-1 lead. Damon’s two-run single did the most damage. Jeter walked and scored on a walk to A-Rod, the third of the frame. Some great Getty images show A-Rod leaping over this bag attempting to break up the inning-ending double play.
The base comes without the bulky metal attachment section and shows a ton of game usage with dirt covering the top. It features two sets of red decals on opposite sides, one with “2009 POSTSEASON” between two NY base logos and the other with “ALCS 2009” between two NY base logos. These are very visible in game photos. On the very bottom is “2nd Base Game 6 Set 2” written in large black marker.
