From the personal collection of late Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame slugger Willie Stargell comes this enchanting piece of royal hardware which is among baseball’s most coveted awards.  Created in i956 in honor of Maryland’s favorite son Babe Ruth it was originally called the “Sultan of Swat Award” to honor the player with the greatest “slugging average”— combining home runs and runs batted in. This one was presented to "Pops" by the Maryland Professional Baseball Players Association after his monster 1973 season when at 33 years of age Stargell led the National League in home runs with 44 and RBI with 119.

The grand and glorious crown is fit for a king with six be-jeweled baseball diamonds circling the golden metal headband and red velvet center head covering. The Maryland Professional Baseball Players Association’sdiamond shaped logo is affixed to the golden diamond on the front of the crown just above the engraved raised text reading: “Babe Ruth Crown Presented to Willie Stargell for Outstanding Batting Achievement 1973 Maryland Professional Baseball Players Association.” There are three sections of engraved text on the back of the crown reading: “1973 NATIONAL LEAGUE ALLSTAR-TEAM” 1973 106 RUNS 158 HITS 44 HOME RUNS 119 R.B.I. .298 BATTING AVG.” “1973 MAJOR LEAGUE ALLSTAR-GAME.” This is the actual 1-of-1 1973 award given to Willie Stargell and no duplicates to our knowledge were ever authorized by Stargell.

Includes Letter of Provenance from Margaret Weller-Stargell.
