In 1971 after leading the National League in home runs (48) Pittsburgh Pirates’ 31-year-old standout Willie Stargell led his team to the World Series championship the franchise’s fourth overall and first since 1960. In a season in which he finished second in the N.L. MVP balloting behind St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Joe Torre after recording a .295 batting average with 151 hits and 125 runs batted in Stargell helped the Bucs outlast the A.L. Champion Baltimore Orioles in seven games to win the Fall Classic. This season also marked the first time the 6’ 2” power hitter eclipsed 40 home runs.
This elegant piece is the smaller version of the coveted World Series trophy presented to players on the winning club every November. The prize is arranged upon a 2 1/2-inch tall 7 1/4-inch in diameter wooden base whose surrounding gold-colored band reads "WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS / PITTSBURGH PIRATES / 1971 / WILLIE STARGELL." Atop the black base a 5"-diameter gold-colored band has a silver-colored baseball at its base and a very detailed gold crown figure at the top. Surrounding the base are 24 gold-colored flags that in alphabetical order bear the names of each Major League team at that time; the banners gradually ascend in size from 5-1/2" to 9-1/2". The trophy comes essentially as-issued and problem-free. This is truly an important sports artifact not only from the Pirates’ organization but also from one of its most beloved players of all time.
