The “Hutch” Award is given annually to an active MLB player who "best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire" of Fred Hutchinson a former MLB pitcher and manager by persevering through adversity. The award was created in 1965 in honor of Hutchinson who died of lung cancer the previous year. The Hutch Award was created by Hutch's longtime friends Bob Prince a broadcaster for the Pittsburgh Pirates and KDKA; Jim Enright a Chicago sportswriter; and Ritter Collett the sports editor of the Dayton Journal Herald. Each winner receives a copy of the original trophy; the permanent display of the Hutch Award is at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown New York where it has been since 1979.

This lot features the 1978 Fred Hutchinson Award that was bestowed upon Pittsburgh Pirates’ mainstay Willie Stargell. That season Stargell batted a steady .295 with 28 home runs and 97 runs batted in. The elegantly designed plague which weighs 20 pounds measures 16.5” wide by 20” tall. Sporting a wood back the plaque includes two levels of engraved silver-plated pieces that frame a portrait of Hutchinson. The Award reads in part: “Fred Hutchinson Award 1978 – HONOR COURAGE DEDICATION MANLINESS – Presented to WILLIE STARGELL as the baseball player most-typifying the courage and character of Fred Hutchinson.” It includes a metal chain on the back for easy display purposes.

Letter of Provenance from Margaret Weller-Stargell.
