In the entire history of thoroughbred racing no jockey has won more important races than the late Willie Shoemaker. In a career that stretched 36 years (1954 through 1990) Shoemaker was the winning jockey in 11 Triple Crown Races: four Kentucky Derby’s two Preakness’s and five Belmont Stakes. In September of 1970 “The Shoe” registered his 6033rd win making him the winningest jockey in horseracing history. Every one of his 2800 subsequent wins prior to his retirement in 1990 simply set a new record.
Offered here is a green racing silk with matching cap and a pair of racing goggles attributed to Shoemaker in original condition without notable problems. The silk itself is trimmed in white on the collar and wrists and includes white embroidery near the base of the gig line that reads “Green Thumb Stable.” The back of the silk feature an ornate gold thoroughbred’s bust on a white silk background trimmed in gold leaves. The inside rear collar includes a manufacturer’s tag that reads “COLORS by LOVELL 1226 South Fifth Ave. Monrovia California.” Its original six snap buttons down the front remain intact. The elegant matching green cap is in comparable condition with a front bow on the brim and a small green knit pom pom on top. The accompanying Kroop’s-manufactured racing goggles are vintage eye protectors that remain in good condition and include their original black strap intact.
