In 1963 at the age of 51 Walter Alston turned in one of his best managerial efforts on record. As the tenth-year skipper of the Los Angeles Dodgers Alston led the team to a 99-63 regular season mark. They finished a full six games ahead of the runner-up St. Louis Cardinals in the National League standings. But it's what occurred in the postseason that really put a spotlight on Alston's managerial prowess. Facing the vaunted New York Yankees in the World Series the Blue Crew recorded a four-game sweep of the Bronx Bombers which included a pair of victories thrown by southpaw Sandy Koufax and a Game 3 complete game shutout by powerful right-hander Don Drysdale.
This lot features the actual 1963 Major League Manager of the Year plaque that Alston received from The Sporting News. The wooden black plaque measures 12" wide by 15" high and includes a metal head-and-shoulder black-and-white portrait of Alston in the center. The bottom of the plaque's face features a special nameplate with the following text in raised lettering: "WALTER ALSTON Los Angeles Dodgers 1963 Major League Manager of the Year Previously honored in 1955 and 1959 the Dodgers' manager merited the award for the third time when he guided his club to the National League pennant and climaxed his success with an unprecedented four-games-to-one sweep over the New York Yankees in the World Series."
