Offered here is an important and historic piece from the personal collection of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Hall of Fame manager Walt Alston an honor bestowed on Alston at a career high point that remarkably came in only his second year at the helm of the then-Brooklyn Dodgers. Alston’s unprecedented string of 23 one-year contracts yielded handsome dividends like seven National League Pennants four World Series titles and a plaque in Cooperstown for Alston but perhaps nothing so sweet as that first World Series triumph in 1955 that put to rest the hated consolation proclamation of “Wait till next year.” Sport Magazine a wonderful pulp offering from the era that delighted fans with its lengthy profiles and articles on major leaguers and also with the stunning color photograph that graced the same pages presented this to Alston following the World Series win that fall over the Yankees. The plaque reads “Sport Magazine Award Man of the Year 1955 Walter Alston Who managed the Brooklyn Dodgers to their first World Championship” which is elegantly engraved on a gold-plated sheet that is intricately framed and mounted to a polished wood board. All of the elements appear to be largely as-issued and problem free without even much of the tiny nicks to the dark-brown polished wood edges on the border. Clearly an important artifact that was carefully preserved for six decades. The good folks of the Borough of Brooklyn applaud mightily even today.
