Tom Watson is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and now plays mostly on the Champions Tour. In the 1970s and 1980s he was one of the leading players in the world winning eight major championships and heading the PGA Tour money list five different times. He was the No. 1 ranked player in the world according to McCormack's World Golf Rankings from 1978 until 1982. Amongst his victories in eight majors are five wins in The Open Championship: 1975 77 80 82 and 83. This lot features one of Watsons tournament-used 9 irons. The 36 Ram Tradition model 9 iron shows ample usage as does the Neumann-branded black leather-wrapped grip. In a signed typed letter on his personalized letterhead that accompanied the donation dated January 23 1978 Watson wrote: I was happy to contribute my 9 iron to the Boys Club of Royal Oak and I understand that this club completes your Once In a Lifetime golf set. I have used this 9 iron quite often and I hope that it serves you as well as it has served me.

Includes original letter that Watson sent to the Boys' Club of Royal Oak as well as a black-and-white 8" x 10" photo showing Watson chipping out of a sand trap.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
