Presented here is the actual shot-put from the famed 1960 Olympics in Rome that Bill Nieder tossed to a World Record 65 feet 7 inches in winning the gold medal for the United States. A graduate of the University of Kansas Nieder was the first collegiate athlete to better the 60-foot mark with a 16-pound shot and was also the first high school prep athlete to break the 60-foot barrier with a 12-pound shot-put. This important Olympic artifact shows the kind of use expected and is neatly presented on a blonde wood base approximately 5 inches square. A nameplate at the front stacked in three lines is engraved “1960 Bill Nieder World Record 65’  7.” An accompanying polished black stone has a figural of a shot-putter engraved in white along with “Bill Nieder Shot-Put 1960 Olympics Rome.” All elements seem to be in largely as-issued and problem-free condition. Comes with a Letter of Authenticity from the Newport Sports Museum Collection.
