Among the rarest artifacts in Lakers history, this cream and powder blue warm-up jacket represents one of the most fleeting uniform designs in franchise history — worn for a single season and virtually absent from the hobby ever since. This example, accompanied a Jerry West game-worn jersey when it crossed the block at Sotheby's in 2025, making its provenance as bulletproof as it gets.
The jacket itself is a study in early-1960s NBA style at its most distinctive. Constructed of plush terry fleece throughout, it features the classic Lakers basketball logo with "LAKERS" script embroidered on the left chest and the team's characteristic powder blue and royal blue double-stripe trim running diagonally across the shoulders and down the arms. The collar opens in a wide, dramatic sailor-style cape that folds down the back — a design element unique to this transitional era of Lakers outfitting and the single most visually arresting feature of an already stunning garment. That rear cape bears airbrushed "Los Angeles" script lettering in the franchise's iconic cursive style, rendered in royal blue with powder blue shadowing. The interior collar carries the hand-inked "00" size marking consistent with team-issued garments of the period.
What separates this jacket from virtually any Lakers warm-up offered at auction is its scarcity at the player and style level simultaneously. This particular design was issued for one year only — 1965-66 — and to date only three examples from any player have been documented. To have one surface with direct association to Jerry West, the franchise's defining player of that era and a perennial All-Star who would lead the Lakers to the NBA Finals that very season, elevates it further still.
Condition is exceptional for a game-used garment approaching six decades of age. The fleece retains its texture and body, the embroidery and appliqué lettering remain crisp, and the pleated satin trim along the shoulder panels shows minimal distress. A small snap at the hem rear is consistent with team-issued construction of the period.
For the serious Lakers collector or vintage NBA specialist, opportunities at this intersection of player, style, and provenance simply do not come along. This jacket is not merely rare — it may be irreplaceable.
