The 1912 T227 Series of Champions is one of the most elusive tobacco issues of the prewar era. The multi-sport set of 25 designs includes only a handful of baseball subjects and Ty Cobb is the crown jewel among them. This example carries the Honest Long Cut advertising back, a variation that is incredibly scarce, and it has been graded VG 3 by PSA. Even well-worn examples of this card rarely reach the open market, making it an amazing opportunity for any advanced tobacco card collector.
The front features a vibrant lithographic image of the "Georgia Peach" in his Detroit home uniform with the old English "D" on the chest, gripping the bat as he strides into a swing. The warm gold and orange background fades into a green field, and "TY COBB" is printed in the upper right corner. The reverse presents a detailed biography under the heading "Champion Batsman, 1911," recounting his early days in Augusta and Anniston and detailing his remarkable 1911 season, in which he batted .420, collected 248 hits and stole 83 bases. The advertisement for Honest Long Cut, "Smoke or Chew," appears at the bottom.
The card displays creasing at the upper right, rounded corners and edge wear, yet the image retains strong colors and nice eye appeal. Cobb retired with the highest career batting average in MLB history and received the most votes in the Hall of Fame's inaugural 1936 election. PSA VG 3 (pop 11 with 13 higher).
