Offered is one of the most coveted images in the hobby's most iconic set: a 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb Green Portrait with a Piedmont 150 advertising back, graded VG/EX+ 4.5 by SGC. Cobb appears in four distinct T206 poses: Red Portrait, Green Portrait, Bat Off Shoulder and Bat On Shoulder. The Green Portrait was printed only in the 150 Series and is the scarcest of the four.

The front shows the "Georgia Peach" in a head-and-shoulders portrait, wearing Detroit's gray flannel jersey with the Old English "D" against a vibrant green backdrop. The caption "Cobb, Detroit" runs along the bottom border. The lithography is especially strong, with rich color in the background and careful detail in the facial features. The reverse displays the blue Piedmont "Base Ball Series 150 Subjects" advertisement with the "Factory No. 25, 2nd Dist. VA" tagline.

Cobb's credentials need little introduction. He retired with a .366 lifetime batting average, still the highest in Major League history, along with 12 batting titles and more than 4,100 hits. In 1936 he received the most votes of anyone in the inaugural Hall of Fame class.

This example presents very nicely for the VG/EX+ 4.5 grade with bright colors, a sharp image, clean borders, and very little corner wear for a T206. The reverse is clean and boldly printed. Poor vertical centering on the front is the only obvious blemish. Encapsulated by SGC (Cert. #1818482). It should be noted that another SGC 4.5 example sold for $30,000 in March.
