No photographer captured the grit and character of the Dead-Ball Era like Charles M. Conlon. A proofreader for the New York Evening Telegram who took up the camera as a hobby, Conlon became the most revered baseball photographer of his time, and his work remains the gold standard for early 20th century baseball imagery. It was Conlon who produced the immortal 1910 image of Ty Cobb sliding spikes-high into third base, and his portraits of the "Georgia Peach" rank among the most coveted photographs in the hobby.

This tremendous single shot from 1912 finds Cobb in his Detroit Tigers road uniform with the classic Old English "D" on his chest, crouched with his hands on his knees in a ready stance and flashing a confident grin toward the action. Behind him, a packed crowd and the buildings of the city skyline fill the background, framing the game's fiercest competitor in the middle of a season in which he batted a staggering .409 en route to yet another American League batting title.

The original Type 1 snapshot boasts incredible clarity and contrast and remains in near flawless condition, with Cobb's features, uniform details and the surrounding field all rendered in remarkable detail. The reverse bears Conlon's purple photographer's stamp with his early "216 W. 111th St., New York" address, along with a period pencil notation reading "Cobb (Detroit)." Remnants of black paper at the four corners on the reverse indicate the print once resided in a period album, adding to its wonderful history while not affecting the image in any way.

A true Dead-Ball Era treasure uniting the era's most dominant hitter with its most celebrated photographer. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA as an authentic Type 1 original photograph.
