Playing under Hall of Fame coach John McLendon Sam Jones was a three time All-CIAA selection at North Carolina College. After the University of North Carolina won the National Championship in 1956 Celtics coach Red Auerbach traveled to Chapel Hill to personally take a look at the members of the championship squad. While there he was informed that the best player in the state was not at UNC but at North Carolina College: Sam Jones. While he didn’t get to see him in action Auerbach remembered the tip and drafted Jones in the 1957 NBA draft. Auerbach’s risk turned out to be the best shooting guard in Celtics history an integral part of 10 Championship teams. The Celtics agreed to pay Jones $6500 for the 1957-58 season money well spent as he helped bring the team its first NBA Championship in his rookie season. This is the contract Sam Jones signed in 1957 at the very start of his Hall of Fame career. The two-sided 8½" x 14" single sheet contract is dated May 11 1957 and has been signed on the reverse by Samuel Jones and club president Walter A Brown in blue pen and NBA President and Hall of Famer Maurice Podoloff in black pen. The contract has three horizontal folds from mailing and the signatures are perfectly preserved. A very unique item from the very beginning of Sam Jones’ Hall of Fame career.
