Ken Griffey Jr. ended his prolific 22-year Major League Baseball career in 2010 with 630 home runs to his credit. The future Hall of Famers professional start however came way back in 1987 and 1988 when as just a 17- and then 18-year-old minor league ball player competing for both the Bellingham Mariners and then the San Bernardino Spirit he was simply trying to find his way to the bigs. It was in the first quarter of 88 when Junior was participating in Spring Training with the Seattle Mariners that he used his first ordered professional Louisville Slugger model bat.

This lot features that vintage classic bat that Griffey swung in his first official spring training at-bat in 1988. The 34-inch 29.5-ounce Louisville Slugger (model M159) Ken Griffey Jr. professional model ash bat is uncracked and shows evidence of light use. A few ball marks which include blue ink transfers are visible on the right barrel. Also visible on the bat are black bat rack streaks and there is a light coat of pine tar on the handle. Junior has autographed the left barrel in blue marker. According to PSA/DNA this M159 model is the arrest and earliest Griffey Jr. bat that the company has ever authenticated. Factory records show that 12 of these bats were manufactured and delivered to Griffey on Feb. 12 1988 for use in spring training with the Ms.

Includes letters of authenticity from both PSA/DNA (bat certification # E36377) and JSA (autograph certification # B84275) as well as a copy of an email from Ronnie Scott Hoffman Mariners' bat boy from 1987 to '89 who was given the bat by Griffey Jr.
