Addendum: This ball was used in the game that Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb's all-time hit record. It is not Rose's actual 4192 hit baseball which would easily be worth six figures. The description has been updated. In addition PSA/DNA has identified one of the inscriptions to be in Dave Parker's hand; the other is in an unknown hand.
On September 11 1985 the Cincinnati Reds hosted the San Diego Padres at Riverfront Stadium. Reds’ player/manager Pete Rose entered the game with 4191 career hits one hit shy of breaking the mythicalTy Cobb’s all-time Major League hit record. In his first at-bat that night in the first inning the 44-year-old Rose laced a single to left-center field off Padres starter Eric Snow to break the record. Rose would finish his playing career a season later with 4256 total hits a mark still standing over 30 years later. This lot features an Official National League (Feeney) baseball used in the same game that night in Cincinnati during which Rose became MLB's Hit King. To reiterate it is not the actual 4192 hit ball. The inning or moment this ball saw action in that game is unknown.
Pete Rose and first baseman Dave Parker--his Reds teammate--have each autographed the baseball in 8-9/10 blue ballpoint pen. According to PSA Parker also inscribed the ball above his signature with “Pete Rose 4192 GAME BALL 9-11-85.” The other inscription--“GAME USED BALL 4192 9/11/85"--surrounding Rose's signature is in an unknown hand as is the black notation "9-11-85 P.R. #4192 GM BALL" on a separate panel below the front seams. The baseball shows moderate game use and comes from one of the most memorable games in MLB history.
LOA from MEARS authentication the ball's game use. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (#AC04504) for the autographs and inscriptions.
