Paul M. Hunter was a prolific amateur golfer in the 1920s who captured his share of tournament trophies. The only five-time SCGA Amateur champion (1908 1909 1921 1924 and 1926) Hunter was also the California Amateur Champion in 1920 and 1921. Of the thousands of golfers who have competed in SCGA and USGA tournaments a handful stand above the rest. The first of those was Paul M. Hunter who was also a medical doctor and was often referred to as simply Dr. Hunter. This lot represents a pair of 1921 California Golf Association Amateur Championship Sterling Silver trophies won by Hunter. The first is a 14.5" tall sterling silver cup on tall neck and pedestal base with a planish gold plate coating inside cup. Cast and applied California Golf Association (CGA) crest with engraved text that reads: AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY DR. PAUL M. HUNTER DEL MONTE CAL SEPT. 5 to 11 1921." The second trophy stands 12.5" tall sports the same CGA crest and has engraved text that reads: "AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Best Gross Score Qualifying Round Won by Dr. Paul M. Hunter Del Monte CAL Sept. 5 to 11 1921."
