Classic set of seven Macdonald Smith signature model irons with hickory wood shafts that date to the 1920s when Bobby Jones was king of the links. Macdonald Smith was a popular Scottish golfer who won 24 times on tour but never any majors (thanks to Mr. Jones). The set includes a 1 3 4 5 6 7 and 8-iron ranging 38 to 41 inches in length each with steel heads and identical suede-like light brown grips. All are engraved with the "Macdonald Smith" signature on the back of the face; irons 5-8 have the brand's hand (open palm) logo engraved as well. The 1 3 and 4-irons have "Iron" (more faded on 3 & 4) engraved at the bottom of the face below their corresponding club number designation. "MASHIE" appears on the bottom of the 5 "SPADE MASHIE" on the 6 and "MASHIE NIBLICK" on the 7 and 8-irons faces. Barely legible on the back faces of the 6 and 7-irons is "HAND FORGED --" which would indicate that each club was crafted with hand-forged steel. The hickory wood shafts are all uncracked and the dot-grooved steel faces are similarly worn down from use. The only obvious sign of aging is the crumbling of the grip material and the unraveling of the string/lace mechanism attaching the bottom of the grip to the shaft. Overall each club presents as-issued and problem-free. What a rare antique golf find!
