The various National League ball clubs that wound up honoring Ozzie Smith as he made his final swing around the circuit that summer can be applauded for both their sentiment and their ingenuity in coming up with some of unique ways to take note of the retirement of the eventual Hall of Famer. For the Cubs that meant something truly inventive: they snagged the No. 1 metal sign (16-by-20 inches olive green with bright white "1") from their iconic scoreboard and framed it in a handsome 2-inch off-white wood frame and voila! the perfect Ozzie commemorative. The metal plate is largely problem free showing only whatever signs of wear a metal number sign would typically receive from being part of the festivities at the Friendly Confines. There is also an attractive metal plaque at the bottom that says "Presented by the Chicago Cubs to Ozzie Smith in recognition of an outstanding 19-year National League Career July 13 1996." Ignoring the question of the plaque the 19-by-23 1/2-inch piece has the unusual trait that it can be displayed upside down without any effect whatsoever on the principal design component. Horizontally not so much.
