George H. W. Bush as the 41st President of the United States (1989-1993) brought to the White House a dedication to traditional American values and a determination to direct them toward making the United States "a kinder and gentler nation" in the face of a dramatically changing world. Born in Milton Massachusetts on June 12 1924 he became a student leader at Phillips Academy in Andover. On his 18th birthday he enlisted in the armed forces. The youngest pilot in the Navy when he received his wings he flew 58 combat missions during World War II. On one mission over the Pacific as a torpedo bomber pilot he was shot down by Japanese antiaircraft fire and was rescued from the water by a U. S. submarine. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action.

Bush next turned his energies toward completing his education and raising a family. In January 1945 he married Barbara Pierce. They had six children: George Robin (who died as a child) John (known as Jeb) Neil Marvin and Dorothy. At Yale University he excelled both in sports and in his studies; he was captain of the baseball team and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation Bush embarked on a career in the oil industry of West Texas. While his baseball playing days at Yale are well known his exploits out on the links are not. According to Sports Illustrated senior writer Gary Van Sickle: "Bush Sr. was not only a pretty good golfer he was the fastest presidential golfer ever maybe the fastest golfer ever. Just what the country needed to encourage faster play.

Offered here is a prototype set of Nike custom irons that were made specifically for the former President but actually wound up on display at Nike headquarters in Beaverton Oregon. According to the consignor Newport Sports Museum Founder and Curator John Hamilton: I bought the set from Nike he said. They were made for him but he returned them to Nike so that put them on display instead. I was told by a friend that Nike had built the clubs especially for Bush Sr. I called them and told them Id like to have them on display at my museum in Newport Beach and they readily parted with the set. The set of eight custom irons 3 through 9 and a pitching wedge are all brand spanking new and boast Regular Flex Low Kick graphite shafts and steel heads. On the back of each iron is the patented Nike swoosh in black and Pres. Bush is lightly engraved on the base of each club right below the hosel. The clubs all appear to be in pristine condition.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
