Three game-used bat from the legendary figure Monty Stratton, who posted records of 15-5 and 15-9 with the White Sox in 1937-38 before a hunting accident in November of 1938 ended his major-league career. The Monty Stratton Story was a fictionalized account starring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson, which was a box-office smash in 1938. Each bat comes with a letter from Stratton's son, Monty Jr., stating that two of the bats were used by the famed hurler in games with the White Sox, with the third bat, a fungo bat, having been used when his father was a coach with the Sox. The letters note that his father did not have his own bats and used the bats of other players while a member of the White Sox. The first bat is a Hillerich & Bradsby Pre Model 1937-39 Lou Frierson 36-inch, 35.5 oz. ash bat with heavy game use and a handle crack and small chip on the knob. The second is a Hillerich & Bradsby Pre Model 1937-40 Rosenthal 35-inch, 33.3 oz. ash bat with heavy game use and a handle crack. Rosenthal and Stratton were teammates on the White Sox between 1936-38. The final bat is a Hillerich & Bradsby fungo bat, 1938-43, 38 inches and 25 oz., showing heavy use and a handle crack. The barrel has been spiral wrapped to prolong the life of the bat; the handle has been taped to secure the crack.
