A player with the talent and drive of Larry Bird comes around once in a generation if we’re lucky. The Boston Celtics understood Bird’s potential and knew he was something special. For 13 seasons in Beantown – from 1979-80 through 1991-92 – Bird personified hustle consistency and excellence in all areas of play: as a scorer passer rebounder playmaker defender and more than anything else a clutch performer. Upon his arrival Bird helped rebuild a Celtics franchise that had been suffering from substandard play and poor attendance in the late 1970s. With Bird as the focal point of a well-rounded squad the Celtics won three NBA titles (1981 ’84 and ’86) and 10 Atlantic Division crowns during his tenure.
This lot features one of Larry Bird’s mid-1980’s Boston Celtics game-worn and autographed white home jerseys. On the jersey’s left tail is the "Designed and Tailored Exclusively for the Boston Celtics Medalist Sand-Knit" manufacturer’s label which includes the size (“46”). Across the front of the jersey is the team name "CELTICS" in green tackle twill letters while on the back is "BIRD” in similar fashion. The player number "33" appears on both the front and back of the jersey also in green tackle twill. Light use is evident throughout as some of the letters show some slight fraying. Bird has autographed the jersey front underneath his number in black marker. Larry Legend was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998.
