Among football pundits, Luís Figo is widely considered one of the greatest wingers of all time. His magnificent professional career stretched from 1989 to 2009 with relatively equal stints at Sporting, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid (“Galácticos”) and Inter Milan. He was the consummate leader of the Portugal National Team for 15 years (1991-2006), handing off the baton to a young Cristiano Ronaldo to lead the “Escutcheons” into the next generation.
Known for his quick bursts and clinical first touch, Figo relished 1-on-1 opportunities on the outside and mastered the art of the cross. While he could finish with the best of them, it was Figo’s incredible vision and timely assists that earned him worldwide respect and made him a cherished teammate of Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Zidane, Beckham, etc. In his final season with Barça, Figo won the coveted 2000 Ballon d’Or before a record €62 million transfer to Real Madrid where he took home 2001 FIFA World Player of the Year honors.
This Portugal jersey was worn by the great Figo in a FIFA World Cup Qualifier match during the prime of his career. On March 29, 1997, Portugal and Northern Ireland drew 0-0 in Belfast. Figo played the entire match. The red/crimson short-sleeved Nike jersey (size XL) with a green collar has the Portuguese FPF crest embroidered on the chest adjacent to the Swoosh logo. The traditional home model (though in this case worn away) carries a yellow and green outlined #7 on the front and back, which was Figo's number throughout his national team tenure. The green side panels with yellow trim are hallmarks of Portugal's classic 1990s Nike kit.
The shirt displays adequate wear from the match, and both sleeve ends have been custom trimmed (presumably to Figo's liking). Stock images on Getty (650326734) from the 3/29/1997 match show Figo wearing the same style shirt with both sleeves trimmed as such. (It should be noted that no professional photo-match attempt was made, leaving open a tremendous buying opportunity). This WCQ match was part of Portugal's qualification campaign for the 1998 World Cup in France where Figo and the Golden Generation would reach the quarterfinals.
Procured from a team source by a longtime collector, the shirt includes MEARS authentication paperwork.
