Father of perhaps the greatest all-around shortstop in baseball history Cal Ripken Sr. first built his own legacy with the Baltimore Orioles spending 36 years as a player coach and manager within the organization. As manager in the minor leagues he compiled 964 wins in 13 seasons. His major league experience with the Orioles came as a coach from 1976-1986 and 1989-92 and briefly as a manager from 1987-1988. He remains the only MLB manager to have two sons on his team at the same time. Sons Cal Ripken Jr. and Billy Ripken credit their father and his tough love tactics for instilling sound fundamentals and a strong mental approach to the game. The three Cal Ripken Sr. items in this lot come from his days as 3rd base coach.

1) 1983 game-worn orange alternate #47 jersey. Ripken Sr. wore #47 from 1976-1984. The size 42 Wilson jersey shows excellent wear with three team repairs on the front just about the numbers. Light but visible fraying throughout. Proper 'Set 1 1983' tagging sewn at shirttail. Comes as issued in appropriate game-used condition.

2) 1985 game-worn gray road #7 jersey. Ripken Sr. switched to #7 in 1985. He became the Orioles manager in 1987 following Earl Weaver's retirement but his managerial stint was short-lived. The Orioles fired Ripken Sr. six games into the 1988 season en route to their infamous 0-21 start. His son Billy Ripken then changed to #7 to honor his father who went back to coaching third in 1989 for another four seasons. The size 42 jersey shows great wear with some minor dirt and/or sweat stains. Little fraying evident. Tagged properly with '85 42 C. RIPKEN SR. 7' inside shirttail. Comes as issued in appropriate game-used condition.

3) Early 1980's game worn cap tagged 'R.i.P 47'. Based on his tenure wearing #47 and the design/style of the logo he most likely wore it from 1980-1984. Cap shows incredible amount of wear with deep sweat and dirt stains throughout. Comes as issued with threading and stitching largely in tact.

Includes Letter of Authenticity from the Orioles Scouting Director.

The items in this lot come from the personal collection of longtime MLB executive Tom Giordano. After a very brief playing stint at 2nd base for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1953 Giordano moved on to a coaching managing and scouting career in baseball that is now 66 years and counting (began in 1948 in minor leagues). He was Director of Scouting and Player Development for the Baltimore Orioles from 1976-1987 before moving on to similar baseball operations positions with the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers. In 2007 Giordano was named East Coast Scout of the Year.
