The 1933 Goudey Big League Chewing Gum set is the cornerstone of pre-war collecting, a 240-card landmark that introduced bold, colorful artwork to a generation of fans. Rogers Hornsby appears twice in the set, and this #188 card is the more distinctive of the two, depicting the legend in his new role as manager of the St. Louis Browns.
Hornsby is shown standing on the dugout steps, one foot raised and arm extended as he points toward the field, a commanding pose befitting a man who spent nearly two decades dominating the National League. The reverse notes his "first appearance in American League as Manager of St. Louis Browns," and recalls that he "seven times led the National League in batting" and was "twice voted most valuable player." A career .358 hitter with two Triple Crowns, Hornsby remains the standard by which right-handed batsmen are measured.
The artwork is wonderfully rendered, with a cream uniform trimmed in red set against the pale blue and yellow tones of the ballpark. The reverse is printed in Goudey's trademark green ink and remains clean and legible. The card displays strong color, fairly sharp corners for the grade and only light surface wear, giving it eye appeal well above the numerical grade. An attractive and affordable example of a key Hornsby card from the most celebrated set of the 1930s. Graded VG-EX 4 (MC) by PSA.
