Addendum: These items do not come with a letter from the family of Bird's former agent Bob Woolf; they do come directly from the estate collection. If necessary SCP Auctions can provide a letter to verify the provenance.
Larry Bird burst upon the NBA in 1979 and immediately made his presence felt. Competing for the Boston Celtics Bird was named the league’s Rookie of the Year in 1980 after averaging 21.3 points per game and leading the 61-21 Celts to the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division title. With Bird leading the charge the Celtics would win the NBA title the following season and secure two more championship seasons (1984 and ’86) during Bird’s tenure. This lot features a pair of Bird’s early 1980’s game-issued Converse All Star shoes. The green-and-white size 13½ shoes are an identical match to the same Converse style shoes he wore during his prolific run with Boston.
In addition this lot includes a pair of Bob Cousy Signature Model “Mr. Basketball” shoes. Issued more than 50 years ago the black canvas high-tops (size 8½) sport “Suction” soles and show some discoloration due to their aging. Though these are not Cousy’s size they are a vintage pair of “Mr. Basketball” Bob Cousy style shoes and evoke memories of his jaw-dropping performances during the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s for the Boston Celtics. The shoe’s original laces remain intact.
Both items originate from the estate collection of Bird’s former agent Bob Woolf.
