Regarded as one of the greatest players of his era Julius "Dr. J" Erving began his pro career in the American Basketball Association with the Virginia Squires and the New York Nets. He was perhaps the main catalyst for the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. Standing 6' 7" he often dominated games with his high-flying acrobatic dunks as well as his pinpoint mid-range shooting. Once he arrived in the NBA he played 11 seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers and led them to the NBA championship in 1983. “The Doctor” was an All-Star selection every year he played in the NBA and was named the league's MVP in 1981. He scored 30026 points in his combined ABA/NBA career; only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Wilt Chamberlain Karl Malone and Michael Jordan have scored more points in the history of professional basketball.

This lot features Erving's Sixers game-worn home jersey from the early 1980's era. It has been inspected by MEARS as a 1979-86 example graded A8. Sporting proper tagging on the left front tail the 100% nylon mesh jersey includes the Wilson [size] 40 manufacturers tag complete with washing instructions included. The front of the V-neck front jersey displays"SIXERS" and his uniform number "6" in vibrant blue tackle twill outlined in red. Elastic re white and blue trim outline the collar and sleeve areas. A slightly arched "ERVING" is sewn in blue tackle twillacross the back of the shoulders just above his uniform number “6” that is shown in blue-on-red tackle twill measuring 8” tall. The jersey shows moderate wear with slight puckering to the letters on the back and light pilling on the mesh fabric. The numbers and letters appear to be all-original. Erving signed the front of the jersey in black marker and added “Dr. J” and his uniform number “#6” just below the signature. The autograph remains solid and rates a strong 9/10 in our book.

Letter from MEARS graded A8. Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
