This historic image captures three of the American League’s greatest hitters on the field before the start of baseball’s very first All-Star Game. Babe Ruth and Al Simmons would start the game in the outfield, and Earl Averill would pinch hit in the sixth inning. Simmons and Averill would record hits in the game while Ruth, being Ruth, blasted the Mid-Summer Classic’s first home run. As the game was intended to be a one-time event, relatively few Type 1 photographs exist of the momentous game. This example, featuring three Hall of Famers, ranks among the finest. The front of the photo has nice toning and full borders. The reverse has no markings or stamps. The photograph measures 9” x 7” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
