As the greatest athlete to come out of The Ohio State University, Jesse Owens was a shoe-in for the program's Sports Hall of Fame. It was at Ohio State under renowned head coach Larry Snyder that he perfected the skills that would win him an unprecedented four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. At the Big Ten Championships in 1935, Owens broke three world records and tied another in a 45-minute span, which Sports Illustrated dubbed the "Greatest 45 Minutes in Sports." While a junior in 1936, Owens competed in 42 events, winning them all. In 1972 the university conferred on him an honorary Doctorate of Athletic Arts degree and five years late he was elected to the school's Sports Hall of Fame. This 13" by 20" wooden plaque weighs over 4 pounds and was presented to Owens upon his induction on September 17, 1977. A photograph of Owens from his Ohio State days is mounted on the plaque above and engraved plate. The award shows light wear and displays perfectly.
The award plaque comes directly from the Owensfamily estate. As a side note that deserves mentioning, Owens' youngestdaughter, Marlene, who also attended Ohio State, met and eventuallymarried another standout track & field sprinter at OSU (Stuart Rankin) coached by the very same Larry Snyder whose tenure in Columbus lasted over 30 years.
