J.C. Martin logged 14 major league seasons with three differentclubs: the Chicago White Sox the New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs.Used mostly as a utility catcher Martin spent the majority of hiscareer with the White Sox (1959 to ’67) but captured a World Series ringwith the "Miracle Mets"in ’69. One of the highlights of Martin’s career--besides his World Series title--was catching White Sox right-hander Joe Horlen’s no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers at Comiskey Park on Sept. 10 1967. The White Sox blanked the Tigers 6-0 as Horlen faced 27 batters that day and struck out four. The win notched Horlen’s 16th victory of the season as he wound up 19-7 and led the league in ERA (2.06) and shutouts with six.

This lot features the Martin's late 1960's game-used catcher’s mitt he wore to call Horlen's no-hitter. The Wilson nylon-stitched professional model mitt (#A2402) showsincredible wear and includes not only Martin’s signature in black marker on thepalm area but also the following inscription: “Joe Holen No Hitter 9-10-67.” (Note the misspelling of Horlen’s last name.) The outside of the catcher’s mittincludes “MARTIN” in faded black marker. A great piece of game worn baseball memorabilia from the White Sox organization’s 12th no-hitter in history.

LOA from J.C. Martin. Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
