J.C. Martin logged 14 major league seasons with three differentclubs: the Chicago White Sox the New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs.Used mostly as a utility catcher Martin spent the majority of hiscareer with the White Sox (1959 to ’67) but captured a World Series ringwith the "Miracle Mets"in ’69. The highlight of this Mets-themed lot are the cleats Martin wore to lay down the most important bunt of the '69 Fall Classic and arguably one of the most famous bunts ever.

The Baltimore Orioles were heavy favorites in the '69 World Series. After losing two of three to start they desperately need to take Game 4. A pitcher's duel had the game tied at 1 heading to the bottom of the 10th at Shea Stadium. The Mets put runners on first and second with no outs and manager Gil Hodges sent J.C. Martin to the plate to pinch-hit for starting pitcher Tom Seaver who had already thrown 10 innings of six-hit ball. Martin laid down a nice sacrifice bunt but Orioles reliever Pete Richert hit Martin in the wrist with his throw to first sending the ball down the right-field line and allowing the winning run to score. The 2-1 victory gave the Mets a commanding 3-1 series lead and they closed it out in five.

The black Spalding cleats show outstanding evidence of game use with scuffing creasing and dirt still stuck to the metal spikes. The laces are missing but the original insoles remain although they've complete hardened with age. The leather-based shoes have built-in black heel pad. The tongues are stamped "9 D" for size and width. The Spalding logo is sewn underneath the right shoe tongue. Martin has autographed the underbelly of each tongue with his No. "9" and "69 WS" inscribed in bold black marker.

Also included in this lot is a New York Mets complete head-to-toe home uniform ensemble commemorating the 35th anniversary of the 1969 Miracle Mets. Martin wore the pinstriped jersey and pants blue belt blue stirrups and blue cap for a 2004 reunion with his former World Champion teammates at Shea Stadium. He signed the pants jersey and cap.

Includes two LOA's from J.C. Martin one for the cleats and another for the uniform.
