During the 1960’s Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers won five NFL titles in seven years and that included three straight from 1965-1967. The Packers also won the first two Super Bowl battles during theirthree-peat. The team’s title trifecta started in 1965 as the Packers had gone two straight years without winning a NFL title. The ground game of the Packers was always an important part of the offensive game plan behind Hall of Fame running backs Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung. The team had rushed for over 2000 yards for five straight years from 1960-1964 and averaged over 160 yards a game in each season. But in ’65 it appeared Hornung and Taylor had lost a step and Jerry Kramer their pulling guard who led them by blocking on the team's trademark offensive play “the Power Sweep” was coming off a season in which he played just two games due to intestinal problems and medical procedures. Nevertheless the Packers made it back to the NFL title game and squared off against the Cleveland Browns. The Browns had arguably the best running back in NFL history on their team: Jim Brown. The Packers would counter with Taylor and Hornung. The game played at Lambeau Field on January 2 1966 turned into a mud bath as someearly snow had softened the surface of the field. The Packers decided to shadow Brown with middle linebacker Ray Nitschke. Old No. 66 did a masterful job as Brown was held to just 50 yards rushing. Meanwhile with the exception of a 47-yard touchdown pass from Starr to Dale the Packers for the most part used their ground game to control the clock and keep Brown off the field. Hornung ended up rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries while Taylor had 96 yards rushing on 27 carries. The big play that gave the Packers a definite edge in the game was a 13-yard touchdown run by Hornung in the third quarter. Kramer had a huge role in that score as he blocked two defenders. That score gave the Packers a 20-12 lead and they wound up winning the game 23-12.This lot features a classic triple-signed “Mud Bowl” 16” x 20” vertical black-and-white image of Hornung Kramer and fellow pulling guard Fuzzy Thurston marching back to the huddle following another play covered inmud. The photo has been signed in blue marker by all three superstars. A classic shot from the game that sent the Packers on their way to winning three straight NFL titles.Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
