In 1965 the Packers made it back to the NFL title game and squared off against the Cleveland Browns. The Browns had arguably the best running back in NFL history on their team: Jim Brown. The Packers would counterwith their two backfield horses: Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung. The game played at Lambeau Field on January 2 1966 turned into a mud bath as some early snow had softened the surface of the field. The Packers decided to shadow Brown with middle linebacker Ray Nitschke. Old No. 66 did a wonderful job as Brown was held to just 50 yards rushing. Meanwhile with the exception of a 47-yard touchdown pass from Starr to Dale the Packers for the most part used their ground game to control the clock and keep Brown off the field. Hornung ended up rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries while Taylor had 96 yards rushing on 27 carries. The Packers wound up winning the game 23-12.This lot features a classic dual-signed “Mud Bowl” 35” x 24” horizontal black-and-white photo on canvas showing Hornung leading the way for Taylor the ball carrier by applying a block on a defending Browns player. Allplayers in the photo are covered in mud. The image has been signed in gold paint pent by both Taylor and Hornung who added their uniform numbers (31 and 5 respectively) after their signatures. This is a terrific image from the game that sent the Packers on their way to winning their first of three straight NFL titles.Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auto Grade 10
