On an exciting young team loaded with voluble superstars may have been one of the unlikely candidates for the World Series MVP Award in 1972 but that's where it ended up. Only recently advanced to full-time status in the lineup he warmed up nicely as his Oakland A's took on the favored Cincinnati Reds in the fall of 1972. Tenace became the first player to hit home runs in his first two World Series at bats and drove in all three runs in the A's 32 victory. In Game 4 the A's were losing 21 with their only run to that point coming on Tenace's solo home run. A ninth-inning one-out rally consisted of four singles Tenace and three pinch hitters as the A's won the game against Cincinnati's ace relief pitcher Clay Carroll. Then he hit a three-run home run in the A's Game 5 loss. In Game 7 he was once again the hero driving in two runs in a 32 victory for Oakland ending with totals of 8 for 23 in the Series with four home runs and nine RBI to earn the MVP nod. He took home a lot of hardware by virtue of that performance and this 19-inch high trophy was part of that haul. It features a silver-plated batter atop the tradition loving cup all of which sits atop a three-tiered wooden base 6 inches high. Four more of the batter figurals adorn the corners; the third tier has a 4 1/2-inch nameplate with engraved "Fury Gene Tenace" a nod to his full name. The bottom wood base has an 8 1/2-inch nameplate that notes "1972 World Series Hero - Second Annual Kansas City Baseball Awards Dinner - January 21 1973." That is at the front of the trophy; on the left-hand side of the same wood tier Tenace has signed in black Sharpie and added the inscription "1972 W.S. MVP." All elements appear to be essentially as issued and problem free with only the tiniest barely noticeable nicks on any of the wood surfaces and the expected toning on the silver-plated batter figurals expected over more than four decades none of which detract from the overall presentation. This is an important artifact commemorating one of the great individual World Series performances in modern times.

Includes LOA from Gene Tenace.
