ADDENDUM: This 1973 smaller-size World Series player trophy along with his '74 trophy in Lot 431 was ordered and made for Gene Tenage after he joined the San Diego Padres in 1977 this according to Mr. Tenace. Since the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners did not enter the league until 1977 and both team flags are represented on the trophy it was most likely produced sometime just after that.

After earning the MVP Award for the 1972 World Series Gene Tenace had established himself as an integral part of a Oakland A's dynasty that was in full flower by 1973. As the A's took on the New York Mets in the Fall Classic that year memories of the Tenace explosion one year earlier - 8 for 23 with 4 home runs and nine RBI - must have been fairly prominent as the vaunted Gotham moundsmen declined to pitch to Tenace who was walked a record 11 times. Such postseason reticence would not resurface in such stark relief for nearly three decades when somebody named Bonds would be issued 13 free passes in the 2002 World Series.

This elegant piece is the smaller version of the coveted trophy that awaits one surviving club every November. The prize is arranged upon a 2 1/2-inch tall 7 1/4-inch in diameter wooden base whose surrounding gold-colored band reads "WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS / Oakland Athletics / 1973 Gene Tenace." Atop the black base a 5"-diameter gold-colored band has a silver-colored baseball at its base and a very detailed gold crown figure at the top. Surrounding the base are 26 gold-colored flags that in alphabetical order bear the names of each Major League team; the banners gradually ascend in size from 5-1/2" to 9-1/2"." Trophy comes essentially as-issued and problem-free. Truly an important artifact from one of the key contributors to the sole American League dynasty in the last 80 years not to come from the Bronx.

Includes a Letter of Authenticity from Gene Tenace.
