In 1972 Oakland As backup catcher Gene Tenace earned his stripes after being inserted into the teams starting lineup by Manager Dick Williams during the seasons final month. Tenace played well and then caught fire as the As secured a trip to the World Series. Not only did he drive in the winning run in the decisive Game 5 of the ALCS against Detroit but he blasted four home runs and drove in nine runs against the Cincinnati Reds in the Fall Classic to pace the As to a four game to three victory. This lot includes Tenaces game-worn size 42 As gold home jersey from that memorable season in which he walked away with MVP honors at the World Series. The V-neck polyester jersey includes the trademark As team logo in tackle twill white satin with green trim on the left chest positioned next to his uniform No. 38. The back of the jersey includes his last name TENACE in green tackle twill across the shoulders just above his uniform No. 38. Solid wear is evident throughout the jersey with serious fraying of the numbers showing on the front and back with multiple team repairs done to secure the edges. Light stains are also evident. Located on the front inside tail are a "McAuliffe Uniform Corp." label a "1972" year tag a "42" size tag and a laundry tag. A terrific gamer from the Most Valuable Player of the 1972 World Series.
