Gene Tenace began the 1972 MLB season as a backup catcher for the Oakland As. He ended the year as the Most Valuable Player of the World Series. Tenace entered the 72 campaign backing up starter Dave Duncan but was given an opportunity to test his mettle during the seasons last month by being made the team's starting catcher. Tenace took full advantage of the opportunity and excelled in both the 1972 American League playoffs and World Series. In the 72 ALCS against the Detroit Tigers he drove in the clinching run in Oakland's 21 victory in the decisive Game 5. Playing in the World Series the following week Tenace caught fire. Not only did he lead the As in home runs with four but he drove in nine runs and batted .348 for the seven-game series as Oakland outlasted the N.L. Champion Cincinnati Reds four games to three. This lot includes Tenaces full-size 1972 Oakland As World Series Championship Trophy. The magnificent award which stands 25 tall by 12 wide boasts 24 gold-plated pennants representing all 24 teams in the major leagues at that time. The large circular black base includes a gold-plated band that reads OAKLAND As 1972 WORLD CHAMPIONS across the front and features the names of all 27 Oakland teammates and key personnel. Centered upon the base of the trophy is a large circular gold-plated band that includes a gold-plated baseball reading 1972 across the sweet spot as well as a large decorative kings crown resting on the top. Finally a 3¼ wide by 2 high engraved green plaque is positioned at the front of the base showing the score of each of the series seven games in front of a pair of raised press pins representing the two Fall Classic contenders. An incredibly special commemorative piece of sports memorabilia awarded to the unlikely hero of the 1972 World Series.
